Baby's first prom

My friend Heather had an 80's prom for her birthday this year. My clothes certainly aren't in style, but I do manage to purge old clothes, and I don't have anything from the 80's. I bought Eric a skinny red leather tie (which he almost couldn't remove afterwards) and wore a bridesmaid dress that I think resembled a prom dress I wore once. I couldn't really remember what 80's clothes looked like until I saw everyone. Now I know I needed a shiny, asymmetric dress with a giant bow. For a minute I thought about wearing a 90's dress and being "fashion forward" for the first time in my life, but then I realized I don't know what 90's clothes look like either. A lot of people went all out! Casey and DogDog lucked out and got to wear their matching pink dresses again. Here are Casey and Hayley with their dates, TJ and Nate, with the classic pre-prom on-the-stairs pose. Casey likes being in the back row for pictures, since she always gets put in the front.

Exercise bike

It worked. Eric rigged up Casey's bike as an exercise bike, just next to the side door. Now she can ride while I get dinner ready.
On Sunday Eric took her to the park with Wesley and family to practice riding without training wheels. I stayed home to try to recover from my cold. He emailed me to say she's getting it and
I got so upset that I was missing it that I drove right over. Really, she's getting very close. She can ride but it's the putting your feet down after you stop part that's hard. She is very determined!

Crazy fun with Cousin Loni and Cousin Evan

Loni and Evan came out from New York to hang out with us. We met them up at Crissy Field and went for a beautiful walk along the water. Casey rode her bike and learned a few tricks from Evan. Then we went to the Exploratorium so the boys and Casey could play. We all had a great time.

Day 2

Mrs. R offers the kids high fives or hugs. Casey picked hug. I think today was better than yesterday. I picked her up, we went out to lunch and ice cream, and then came home so I could take a nap and she could watch Arthur and Clifford. I think we are both slightly sick. I can't even remember the last time we were sick.

Last night I asked her if she was going to cry today. She said that she always cries for four days, so on Wednesday she wouldn't cry. I told her on Wednesday we'll celebrate with ice cream. Needless to say there was no crying today. Our girl was brave. Brave girls love strawberry ice cream.

We survived her first day

She didn't look super happy when I picked her up. Maybe a little tired because she woke up so early today. She said she was the only one who cried and she got to sit on the assistant's lap (which she seemed pleased about). Her favorite part was recess. Actually, her favorite part was getting a bag with some candy in it from her teacher. (!!!) It came with a nice note, saying it had Smarties because they're going to learn a lot, and a Lifesaver because she will always be there to help them, and an eraser because it's ok to make mistakes, and a sticker because they are going to stick together, and a penny because they are all valuable, and I can't remember why she got the Starburst. It was very sweet, but I had to listen to her ask me all day long if she could have the Lifesaver. (I let her have the other two after school.) So she's already learned two new things -- Lifesavers and Starbursts. Nice.

She doesn't remember the names of any of the kids. There was one girl in the afternoon class who she knew from camp, so that was exciting.

Our neighbor (3rd grade) colored this same picture when he was in kindergarten. Supposedly she colored this one by herself. This is more coloring and more staying in the lines than she's ever done in her life. I can't even believe she sat long enough to do it. She even got the colors in the right order. (I noticed one other kid's included a black stripe, so I don't think they told them they had to do it this way.) Eric and I have to wonder if someone helped her, but I don't think anyone did. If she did it herself, that's one damn good school.

First day of kindergarten

She didn't cry, at least while I was there. She has 14 kids in her class -- 8 boys, 6 girls. There are even higher boy-girl ratios in the other kindergarten classes. The afternoon class she overlaps with for an hour and a half has 15 kids -- 10 boys! She wasn't quite as excited as the pictures make her look. I'm not sure how Eric got those. She left DogDog at home, and had Roo (Kanga's baby) in her lunchbox, but carried around a pack of tissues as her security blanket. I can't wait to go pick her up and see how it was. We're going to walk over to extended care just to peek in, and then Ashley and Karen are coming over.

A superstar came to our house today

On Tuesday, Casey hadn't gotten her letter telling which class she was in, and I knew that another kindergartener had gotten hers on Monday. I found out which class she was in by emailing her teacher. Well, I emailed the teacher I was hoping for. Mrs. R emailed that Casey was in her AM class (yay!) and if she hadn't gotten the letter by the next day (which was yesterday) then I should let her know. No letter came, so late last night I sent her an email. This morning at about 7:40 I got an email verifying our address, saying she felt terrible, and offering to bring the letter over. I said "Sure!" and then got Casey dressed and took a quick shower. While I was in the shower I realized I should have offered to go get it at the school, or even suggested for her to just email the info. But those seemed fairly obvious, and before I knew it, the doorbell was ringing (at almost 8am). I was a little nervous, but Casey just stood there with her mouth open, holding DogDog, not saying a word. Mrs. R said, "Oh, I see you have your doggy," she met DogDog at orientation, but Casey just looked at her. I didn't invite her in or anything. I'm not sure if I was supposed to or not! I hope she is this nice all year! And I hope Casey is able to talk to her... . Thank goodness the house was clean.

Edible flowers

Chloe showed us that there were edible flowers in the garden. Casey, Louisa, and I looked at her skeptically, but we all tried them. Not so delicious -- see photo 3. Still, we ate a lot of them. It's just fun to eat flowers.

Do you think they had any fun at the beach?

Man was that water cold, but much less crowded than San Diego beaches! Those girls didn't even care, they were too busy. They were about the same level of craziness for getting in the water and for riding bikes.

Right before we went on the trip, Casey got a pink shirt in the mail from Aunt Kendra and Uncle Jon. It was her dream shirt -- short and long sleeves, cupcake, polka dots, and pink. Casey wore the pink cupcake shirt every day, but would occasionally take it off if we were going to the beach, because she wanted to "keep it nice". I don't know why we packed any other clothes for her.

On Sunday we went to the Children's playground in Golden Gate Park. The girls all did the big cement slide and they all took a try on the big spider web rope play structure. Bridget and Louisa's cousin Chloe came out too and she helped the kids climb.

I spent most of my weekend trying to get a picture of all three girls together. I did manage to get a few good ones! The last one is my favorite. Bridget was following Casey up the side of the stairs with her popsicle and fell into the flowers. I think she only stopped smiling once all weekend, and it wasn't when her popsicle got all covered in dirt either. She probably knew her dad would come and wash it off for her.

Half Moon Bay with the cousins

We went to Half Moon Bay for the weekend with Aunt Amy, Uncle Bill, and Cousins Louisa and Bridget. Eric found us a big yellow house that was almost attached to the bike path which led right to the beach. So as you can imagine, there was lots of biking and playing on the beach. Those girls had a great time riding fast, trying to tie their bikes together, trying to ride each other around on one bike, and riding down a steep little hill while yelling "Shazam!" They tried riding around on some dirt paths, but with training wheels, you end up on an outdoor stationary bike. Actually, maybe we should try that at home.

Kindergarten update

Casey got Mrs. R! Woo hoo! Mornings. I'm so happy.

Kindergarten orientation

This morning was kindergarten orientation, from 8:40 to 9. Luckily we didn't get an earlier slot because there is no way we would have made it in time. They were running behind schedule and didn't get to Casey until 9. But it was good, because we walked around the classroom and she got to see that there was some fun stuff. It was also bad because I had a meeting at 10 and my office is about 35-40 minutes away. There were a few books out about the first day of kindergarten so we read two of them. One was about how all of the parents are worried that their kindergarteners are going to cry, and how the kindergarteners don't cry but the parents are all huddled peeking in the doorway, crying. Heheh. That's me. I was getting all teary eyed and choked up at the thought of her going to kindergarten.

She got to hang out in room 1 with me (and other parents and kids - we didn't really meet any) until one of the 3 kindergarten teachers came to get her and take her into room 2 where they did the assessments. Each of them gave her some kind of assessment. All I could get was that they asked her about colors and letters and it wasn't too hard. I said, "no numbers?" and then she said something about telling them she could count from 1 to 31. Anyway, the teacher said she will do very well in kindergarten. I don't know what to think though, because I can't imagine that she would say otherwise in front of a kid.

Meanwhile, I had homework to do. I was prepared to tell them what kind of teacher she would do well with, "fun, not too strict" or how she did in preschool, "didn't like the prescribed art projects that tell you exactly what to do and how to do it," but it was all a form that asked lots of questions, like, who does she most often play with. Choices are: older kids, younger kids, same age kids, girls, boys, alone. So, I circled them all. She doesn't really play alone, but she's an only child, so I felt like I had to circle alone, too. They didn't have an option that said adults. Then it asked at what age she could walk (I said less than 1 year) and at what age she could put together a complete sentence. Um, there were a lot of firsts that I missed, but that's not one of them. I have absolutely no idea at what age she could put together a complete sentence.

They asked what she likes, so I circled almost all of them (everything except art projects). Books, drawing, active play, outside play, and now I can't remember what else. Then I had to write her strengths and weaknesses, and what she usually gets disciplined for when she gets disciplined, and what we do to discipline her. I was so stumped on the discipline one. She does occasionally get a one minute time out in her room, but I can't remember what for. I think she got one a couple of nights ago even. I said it was probably for not listening but she's usually pretty good and doesn't get disciplined a lot. I think. How do I know what to compare to? Then it asked if I could volunteer and on what days. I circled Friday, and then circled both weekly and biweekly, since I don't know yet. Then it asked if she was a leader or a follower. I had already circled all of my options on several questions, and didn't want to do it again, so I wrote in "both?". Solved that problem. Then it asked me to describe her, but I'd already done a lot of describing and didn't know what else to say. I needed more time for my homework.

I actually requested a particular teacher. I've never done that before. The teacher who brought her back to me was the one I wanted, so I told her I had heard good things about her and if she could swing it that I hoped she would get Casey in her class. She told me to write it on the form, so I did. I hope the other teachers don't feel bad. I also hope it works! Then of course Casey heard me say that, so now she wants that teacher. Cross your fingers for Mrs. R!

Check out our private pool

More fun

Today we had a more low-key day and went to the cove to check out the view. We also checked out the cave, which didn't impress the kids, but they bought some shiny pirate stickers and were happy with that. We've been hanging out outside eating lots of popsicles.
