Earning frequent flier miles like a big girl
The flight home was much longer than the flight out there. It was delayed (while we were already on the plane) plus it takes longer to go in that direction. Luckily her nap was longer too (we learned that it pays to wake her up early before the flight) but 6.5 hours is still a long time. Casey beat Grandma Micki's record for most new friends on a single flight. At one point the woman across the aisle behind us was holding Casey's Doodle-Pro (you write on it with a fake pen and then push the lever to wipe it clean). The woman behind her was holding Casey's barnyard animals book. When one person wouldn't look up, she'd go to the other one to play or get read to. It was a little embarrassing but when I tried to pick her up she screamed and arched her back so I figured these people were doing good for a whole planeful of people. There was a guy across the aisle from me and another in the seat behind me who were trying to get her attention, but she didn't offer them any toys or books. I wanted to take a picture but it would have been weird to be snapping photos while strangers babysat.
We had a great time but there's no place like home.
Last day in NY
The last day in NY was my busy conference day. Eric and Casey went to F.A.O. Schwartz toystore. I'm sure she could have talked him into anything but what she wanted was a little black dog stuffed animal. The name on his tag is Titus the Rotweiller but around here he just goes by, you guessed it, DogDog. She's not usually a big fan of stuffed animals, so we were pretty surprised, but it's been a few days and she still seems to like him.
At lunch we arranged to meet some friends from the China trip, Judy and Jordanna, in one of the hotel lobbies. It was great to see them. Jordanna is so adorable and she's caught up to Casey in weight but not in height so you can imagine how cute and cuddly she is. She's a smiley happy baby. I can't even believe I didn't bring my camera to get a picture of the girls together.
Loni and my friend Mette joined us for dinner at an Italian restaurant. Casey tried to be fair and sat in each of their laps for three minutes at a time switching back and forth between them. Then Mette and I went to a reception for work and Eric, Casey, and Loni went to see Loni and Evan's place and went out to get dessert. No fair! At dessert the song "Brick House" came on, and Loni was surprised to learn that Casey was singing along. (She yells "OW!" every time they say "house" in the song.)

Around town
Today we walked around the town. We walked to Rockefeller Center to watch the ice skaters, and to Bryant Park, and anywhere Eric took us. We went to Whole Foods for lunch and sat in the cafe. Casey didn't eat very much but she made lots of friends. We sat on one side of a picnic table and there were people on the other side and she was offered lots of food. Probably because she was staring at them and they assumed she was coveting their food but really she just wants to make friends. One woman gave her a piece of strawberry from her own spoon. Would you ever do that? I was so surprised that I didn't know what to say and I let her do it. Then I kicked myself. Another guy offered his yogurt. He had already eaten most of it.
For dinner we went to Carnegie Deli and she made friends with a waiter and a waitress. Of course Casey told them "HI!" and "Mmmm" to let them know she enjoyed the matzoh ball soup and apple sauce. I think the waitress was ready to take her home. Then we took her to a mall where we tried to tire each other out. She won. It wasn't even a close contest. I know. We're bigger. But she doesn't have to carry us or keep us from running onto an escalator.

Central Park Zoo
Casey had a great time playing with Loni and Evan. It's not surprising because they are very fun and energetic. She wanted them to carry her around, which was great because my arms were getting tired and she wouldn't go in the stroller. They took us to Central Park and we walked around and then to the zoo. Casey watched the sea lions for a really long time. It was amazing actually, because I was just holding her up on the fence while she watched and the rest of us talked. I think she would have even stayed longer but we wanted to go see some other animals.
Then we went to a fancy kid-friendly restaurant. I was a little hesitant because everything looked so nice and breakable, but she did really well. There was another little kid in a high chair next to us so they both looked at and reached for each other while we ate. She hardly ate anything even though we ordered some of her favorite stuff, but it was a pretty civilized experience all in all. She must have known that when she got back to the room all we would have to feed her is cookies and cereal. The staff at the daycare are going to have a hard time breaking these bad habits!

NYC here we come
The flight was not too bad. Mainly because Casey took a nap that lasted over an hour! I guess getting her up early is the way to go, although none of us thought so at the time. She enjoyed all of her new toys and books, especially the little cars and the doggie finger puppets that Dada hid in the plastic Easter eggs in her new backpack. But her favorite was a cup of ice with a fork for stirring. Figures.
I gave her a little bag of Cheerios and couldn't figure out if she was eating them or not because I could hear her crunching but I could also see that there were wet Cheerios on her sweater. Then I realized my mistake. I threw regular ones in with strawberry ones. Even if you like Cheerios, which I do, but I admit they taste a bit like cardboard (in a good way - I think Domino's Pizza tastes like cardboard too, but I like it) if you put them next to a sweeter version they suffer by comparison. It was a messy flight.
She played peekaboo with the people behind us, when they weren't sleeping. If Casey caught anyone sleeping she'd do the sign for "night night" and say "hmmm?". She did the same if anyone was wearing a hat or glasses, or putting on their shoes. Sometimes I could barely see the person who was sleeping or putting on shoes but then I'd see where she was looking and realize she was right.
When we got here we were walking around and she fell asleep so we got some food to go from the place on the corner and ate it in our TINY little room, sitting on the bed while Casey slept on it and using the minifridge as a table. They upgraded us to a bigger room when Casey charmed them at check in. I can only imagine the size of the smaller room. They asked us if we wanted the crib in the closet! No thanks, we'll skip the crib.
The food we got was really good. We had pizza and salad and Casey had chicken soup. I was embarrassed to tell my cousins where we ate (and that we liked it) because for NYC, eating at that place was the equivalent of eating at a 7-11.
Casey loved the trip to the hotel from the airport -- no car seat. We were sitting in the backseat of a cab and a guy in the car next to us is on his phone and waving at us. Then a few minutes later I noticed a different guy waving at us. Not really what you expect from NYC ... and then I realized Casey was waving and smiling at all of the cars and people were waving and smiling back.

20 months old today
Casey is 20 months old today. I am 492 months old today. Maybe in November I'll celebrate my 500 monthday. This morning when Casey woke up I told her we were going to go to Gymboree. About an hour later she put her hands on her head (Gymboree sign) and said "hmmm?" I didn't know she would remember. She was looking a little tired and I considered skipping but it's a good thing I didn't.
Tomorrow we're waking up VERY early and heading to NYC. I have a conference there and Eric and Casey are going to have a few days of daddy-daughter time. We're also going to see my cousins so it should be fun. Eric and I have bought probably close to $100 worth of tiny books, toys, stickers, and more for the plane ride. We didn't mean to spend that much but between the two of us - he got toys, I got books - we may have overdone it. But if you figure she spends about five minutes per toy, we need about 60 toys per trip! Hopefully she'll take a nap.
I have to pack. Before Casey, I would have been half packed with all of my clothes for the trip lying out on the extra bed. Now I'm lucky to be almost done with my laundry. And all I want to do is go to sleep. I had a nice day though. I went for a run. I dropped Casey at daycare for a few hours and went to lunch with a friend. Casey and I stopped at Starbucks after Gymboree. Someone walked off with my chai though (with my name on the cup!) so I had to get another one. Meanwhile Casey made a couple of friends. She was trying to chase a little boy around but a girl kept getting between them and trying to hug Casey. She kept at it though and waited for an opening.

Easter bagels
We went to an Easter party at daycare today. The party was at 3:30 so Eric and I both left early so we could be there. When I got there I was surprised to see Casey off playing while Eric was talking to another kid. Then Casey saw me and wouldn't let me put her down. Maybe she didn't want to get left twice in one day. Eric explained that if you sit down she will run around more so I tried it.
Then we went to the backyard for the Easter egg hunt. The kids all got bunny ears and new backpacks and Casey got one with a butterfly on it. It took her a while to get the hang of egg hunting and luckily there were so many eggs that there were still some left by the time she started picking them up. She would pick one up, yell for me to open it, check it out, and THEN go for another egg. I will have to prep her better for next year. Pick up as many eggs as you can and THEN check them out. The things you have to teach kids. Shouldn't that be obvious? Next year, next year.
They served cookies, fruit, vegetables, and bagels and cream cheese. She was all over the grapes and and the little pieces of bagel and cream cheese we put on her plate. Then she got her hands on the whole bagel and was walking around with it just licking off the cream cheese. Usually we get her egg and cheese on her bagels. To think she she had to go to an Easter party to discover the joy of cream cheese.
As time went on, Casey got more comfortable and started running around and going up and down the steps and looking in the window at the dog dogs. It was nice to see her as she usually is when she's there, and not just when she's sad or crying when I drop her off. I could tell that she liked the teachers and kids there and that she liked wandering around and checking things out. It was also nice to meet some of the other parents.
On the way out Casey got another present, a pink fold-up camping chair. It is really cute. And she loves to sit in any kind of little chair so it's perfect for her. No wonder Marcy was so excited this morning when I dropped Casey off. It was a really fun party.

'Copter Ride
[Eric posting] This is actually a bit dated - it's from the begining of February, so Little Girl is 18 months-old or so. We had gone out to dinner with the Lui's to a sushi place that Casey loved - she had teriyaki, noodles, and tamago, and ate like a champ. Afterwards Casey got to discover the joys of the coin-operated ride with (one of) her boyfriend(s), Kyle. I had forgotten it was on our video camera, but it's a good one.
(I like it because it's video evidence of Casey's sense of humor.)

Out on a school night
Casey seems to be doing ok in daycare. It's still hard to drop her off though because she hugs me hard as soon as I get her out of the car and cries when I leave. But she just cries for a minute and then she has a good time. Yesterday Eric went to pick her up and she yelled "Dada!" and then she looked at the kids and said "Dada". I think it was nice of her to introduce him. Oh, and she was dressed like a genie. Today they told me that she slept on her mat and even stayed on it for a bit after she woke up. Crazy.
After daycare the three of us stopped at Gymboree and tried the music class. She participated a bit and shook the shakerthingies when she was supposed to, hitting them on the ground, her knees, and her shoulders on key, and then decided it was not as fun as the main gym room and went to the door and did our sign for Gymboree (hands on her head). The three of us snuck out and played.
Then we went out for Japanese food. She loved it. Her favorite thing is the tamago roll - she was nodding yes with approval while she ate it. She also loved the noodles and figured out how to put one end in her mouth and slurp it in. Nice.

Exercise for Dada
This weekend we made sure Dada got his exercise. We went for a nice long hike at Russian Ridge and Eric carried Casey in the backpack. Unfortunately she's not quite heavy enough to slow him down to my pace, but maybe in 5 or 10 more pounds. The wildflowers are already out and it was gorgeous there. Casey pointed out all the birds and trees. Eric asked how long I thought we could hike and I said as long as the Fig Newtons hold out. We went to visit Anna, Eric, and Oskar on the way home and Oskar showed Casey all of his toys and Anna and Eric made us dinner. We might have to go there more often! I've never seen her eat so much in one sitting.
This morning we made a double batch of pumpkin bread. Casey helped stir and dump in the ingredients, but she didn't help eat it. I'm not sure why because I thought it was pretty good. Then we went for a bike ride with Davina and Tyler. She enjoyed the first ten minutes, then enjoyed a nice snooze, and woke up for the last ten minutes. I was riding behind them when she woke up. Wouldn't it be strange to wake up and you're on the back of a bike? She started laughing and hitting Eric on the butt. Too bad I didn't have the camera handy.
Then we went to meet Veronica, Kyle, and Cami at Vasona Park and took Casey on her weekly carousel ride. This was the biggest one she's ever been on. It was so big that Eric and I both rode (not on the horses, we stood). We played on the playground, chased dog dogs, and rode around in some cars that Veronica brought. We were all exhausted by the end.

Friday
I'm not supposed to work fridays (or mondays) but of course this week I had a meeting from 10-12. We went to daycare and sat on a chair together and all the other kids could see that Casey was sad and they all started bringing over these huge rubbery plasticky animals: a lion, a panda, a two-headed dragon, all kinds of dinosaurs. It was really sweet. Then when they ran out of animals one kid gave her a plastic cup and bowl and the offerings began again - this time, plastic fruit. We were covered in plastic fruit and a couple of heads of plastic cauliflower. Marcy (the owner) said "Don't blame us if she starts acting like a princess!" I was hoping she'd get distracted and she had to try hard not to. Finally I left and she cried. Sigh.
I picked her up at 12:30 and she was very happy to see me. We went to see the chickens at the farm and she got to run around as much as she wanted. Then we went to Gymboree and she ran around for another hour and a half. The best teacher was there so it was a lot of fun. She even played Casey's favorite song, "No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" while the kids jumped on the big mat. We both had a blast.
We headed over to pick up a pizza again and Casey entertained the troops while we waited. They were impressed when they saw her doing sign language and she was in a mood for showing off, so she showed them almost every single sign she knows. Hat, socks, shoes, glasses, diaper, more, please, night night, brush teeth, water, milk, food, light, car, key, book, baby, down, cold, rain, bath, clean, all done, phone, tree, dog, cow, monkey, rooster, giraffe, fish, bird, and silly (we try not to use silly too much because it leads to a thumb up the nostril). We're working on bike right now.
As we left, a woman said "Thanks for coming!" and she didn't even work there.

The great communicator
Everyone says Casey is a great communicator even though she can't talk. When I got to daycare at 4pm today, she jumped into my arms and signed "car" and "bye bye" and pointed at the door, grunting louder and louder the longer I talked. When I arrived I didn't see her at first because she was crawling under the table, so I assume she wasn't having too bad of a time.
Eric dropped her off this morning and she clung to him hard, like she did with me yesterday morning. It's so hard. They said she only cries for a minute when we leave, but today she cried a little when the next couple of kids got dropped off. Eric hung out with her for a bit and there were some other kids running around and showing off for them and one ran too fast and fell and started crying. Casey stopped crying and signed "baby". Heheh. She does that when she sees kids cry. Is she mocking them?
Yesterday I picked her up at 4 and took her to Gymboree. She was running around as usual and there was a grandmother there who said "He's all boy! I can tell, I have two of my own!" "Um, actually she's a girl." See what happens when I dress her in red instead of pink? She wanted to wear her red hat today so what was I supposed to do? The woman's granddaughter was older than Casey and totally wanted to play with her and pick her up. Casey was ok with the playing part but doesn't like it when kids try to pick her up. She's pretty tough and doesn't get phased by most falls, but she doesn't really fight back with kids. She likes to play with them and often offers a ball or a toy. By the end we had to run extra fast to avoid this little girl. Casey liked the grandpa though and kept wanting to sit by him and then she sat on his lap. I had to give her a bath when we got home though because she stunk like old man cologne. Ew.

She did it!
Casey passed her TB test, thank goodness, so we were able to go to dayare. I hung out there with her for an hour and then left her for about four with one phone call in the middle. She cried a little when I left so they took the kids to the park to take her mind off it. At naptime she slept for an hour but wouldn't lie down on the mat so someone had to hold her the whole time. When I went to pick her up she was in the highchair having a snack of cantelope and animal crackers and she yelled loudly when she saw me. I pulled her out to give her a hug and then had to put her back in the chair because she wanted to finish her snack. Then she played for a bit and Eric showed up and she screamed with excitement again. Eric ended up with a nice collection of play food because all of the kids kept bringing him snacks. Last week when I was there I was sitting in a chair and Casey and the other kids kept bringing me stuffed animals and other toys and then it was time to clean up and I found myself with a pile of toys and didn't know where to put them. Cute kids.

More rides
We went to Happy Hollow again today with Veronica, Kyle, and Cami. I'm afraid Casey is going to be so used to going on merry-go-rounds and rides that by 2 she'll think it's no big deal. She went on the carousel three times and went on the car ride with Kyle twice, once forward and once backward. We weren't sure if she would freak out half way through but when Eric took her out the first time she shook her head and didn't want to get out.
.
This evening when we were eating dinner she kept waving bye bye and yelling ya! ya! and pointing at the door. Then I thought she signed "shoes" and then she walked over and picked up her shoes and tried to put them on. I said, do you think she wants to go next door and see Arjan? I took her outside the front door and she pointed at their house, so I called Deanne and she said come on over. I guess that's what she wanted. While we were there she played with Arjan, his keyboard, and his Legos. She brought me a set of glitter pens and she must have wanted them really badly because she signed "please" for the first time without prompting. A lot of her signs look similar, so at first I thought maybe she was saying bath with one hand, or maybe yummy, but we weren't eating, and then I figured it out.
.
She has the same problem understanding me sometimes. When I told her I was going to get her a glass the other day she did the sign for glasses (like what you wear when you haven't put in your contacts). When we were reading Goodnight Moon I said "where's the mouse" and she pointed to her mouth.

Tipping the scales at 21 pounds ...
Casey almost skipped right into the doctor's office, running alongside the doctor and nurse saying "hi! hi!". Clearly Casey didn't remember being there before but I was glad the doctor got to see her while she was not clinging to me and crying. Even when we walked into the exam room she was smiling and happy. Then, when it was time to weigh her she screamed and turned bright red. She does not like that scale. The good news is that she weighed 21.3 pounds - she's finally heavier than the weight listed in her referral. I'm not sure if the referral was right or not, but I'm glad she passed it.
She got two shots that I can't pronounce or spell, and a TB test. One time when we were at Gymboree, a well-meaning grandmother was putting ink stamps on her granddaughter and she put some on Casey. The rest of the day Casey would look down at her hands or feet and see the stamps and hold them up and start crying. So I wasn't sure how she'd do with the TB test. She noticed it a couple of times (obviously she noticed it while the nurse gave it to her) but she seems to be fine. The doctor wasn't planning to give it to her yet but since she's starting daycare she needs to have it. We have to go in Monday to get it looked at before daycare and work. Great. There is a chance she will have a false positive, which is why she wasn't planning to give Casey the test until she was 2. I can just imagine calling the office on Monday morning at 10am and explaining that I'm not actually coming back to work that week.
After the shots, the nurse gave Casey her first lollypop and we tried to get her to eat it but she was too busy screaming. The nurse even ate one to show her what it was. I asked for a wrapped one to take home (no it wasn't for me, Casey likes crinkly plastic) and on the way out I picked up a dog sticker for her. She looked at it in the elevator and said "dog dog" and then wanted me to open the lollypop. She put it in her mouth and I didn't hear a peep from her in the car the whole way home! I looked back and she was all hunkered over in her car seat clutching the lollypop (and not just the stick) completely covered in a slimy mix of snot, tears, sweat, and lemon lollypop juice. She fell asleep right before we pulled into the garage. I got her into bed and when she woke up I picked her up and she pointed back at her bed. Usually when she wakes up she points at the door - sign language for "get me out of here". At first I thought maybe she wanted to nap more and then I tried handing her everything on her bed but she didn't want any of it. Luckily I saved her lolly in the kitchen because that is what she was looking for.
